Day 7: Positivity

If opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door. (Milton Berle)

Today’s objective: Understanding why positivity is essential for recognising opportunities going forward.

If you remember the basic idea from day 2, gratitude, kindness, caring, forgiving and generosity together create an altogether more positive outlook, and in turn contribute to a more positive self-esteem and thus help to generate true self-love. In other words, these activities generate “positivity” and optimism.

However, while each one of the previous five activities are powerful tools, the brain also can be trained to recognise more actively positive patterns. This is especially important when confronted with negative aspects. And while the five activities from before are most likely to generate mostly positive responses, it is important not just to focus on the positive.

Today is the turn to reflect back on to a three bad experiences, and see how they turned out. The point of the exercise is to identify the positive

Day 6: Generosity

Your greatness is not what you have. It is what you give. (Anonymous) Click To Tweet

Today’s objective: Understanding generosity and why non-material generosity is so important.

The word generosity normally evokes feelings of giving to others liberally: expensive presents, generous meals and … you name it. Many acts of generosity appear to entail selfless acts of giving away, to loved ones, or to charity, to a person in need… However, many psychological studies actually have shown that generosity is anything but selfless. In fact, one study even linked the right kind of generosity with longevity. So, right up there with gratitude, generosity seems to influence a person’s self-esteem in almost unlimited positive ways, being a true self-love corner stone (and also a pretty good promoter of health and happiness).

So what makes “good” generosity? Firstly it is important to stress that “good” generosity isn’t about buying a bigger gift. In fact, money and generosity are not necessarily linked at all. The key to good generosity is

Day 5: Forgiving

Forgiveness does not change the past. But it clears the way to a better future! Click To Tweet

Today’s objective: Reflect upon the key role forgiveness plays when adopting a learning mindset.

Things don’t always go to plan. We make mistakes, everyone makes mistakes. It is simply a fact of life. We can’t change that mistakes, no matter how great or small, happen, but what we can do is change how we react afterward – and react in a way that is promoting healthy, caring self-love.

Many people react with blame: they blame either themselves for something that happened – or they blame someone or something else. The problem with this is that it neither solves the mistake nor does it provide a way of making things better in future (or living positively with the consequences). All it encourages is revisiting something that can’t be changed and reminiscing about the causes.

The key to successfully respond to mistakes is
